As the school year winds down and the anticipation of summer break grows, it’s the perfect time to inject some extra joy and creativity into your classroom. That’s why I’m thrilled to share an exceptional idea that might just be the highlight of your students’ year—a Potato Theme Day! Yes, you read that correctly. It’s a day devoted entirely to potatoes, and it promises to be as educational as it is entertaining.

Why Potato Day?

At first glance, dedicating an entire day to potatoes might seem a tad unusual. However, this low-prep, high-engagement event is designed to offer students a delightful end of the year break from routine while reviewing core educational concepts. From creating their very own potato pets to whipping up some delicious potato candy, this theme day is set to be a hit among students. We’ve ensured that implementing these activities is a breeze with detailed instructions and visual aids.

A Peek into the Activities

Potato Theme Day is not just about having fun; it’s a comprehensive unit that ties in important educational elements across various subjects. Here’s a taste of what’s included:

MATH: Through the Potato Equation Sort, students will engage in sorting true and false equations. This equation sort comes in two levels – addition and multiplication!

PHONICS: The Smash the Potato Game is a fun partner activity where students practice identifying and reading long vowel words.

GRAMMAR: With the Noun, Verb, Adjective French Fry Sort, students sort parts of speech and then use those words in a sentence. This activity can be a craft or a center!

COMPREHENSION: Potato Pants and The Couch Potato are the CUTEST stories!  Students will use story maps to identify story elements and even craft a BME Couch Potato craft. (This unit includes read aloud links if you don’t have the books!)

SCIENCE AND READING: Students get to learn the science behind growing potatoes and they even get to grow a potato in a jar.

WRITING: The Potato Pet activity is a FAVORITE in my classroom! It fosters creativity and persuasive writing as students create a pet and convince others to adopt it. I give each student a potato and then put out craft supplies on the circle table! All you really need is sharpies, toothpicks, google eyes, and fuzzy sticks.

Extra Bits of Fun

To round off the day, there’s the option to make potato candy. If you have students with peanut allergies you can use chocolate chips or sprinkles.
