I just finished up my Kevin Henkes Author Study last week. {It is one of my FAVORITE units!!!!} I will be posting much more about all of these reading activities once the school year begins, but I am so excited I had to share!!! It also helps that my two little cuties are with Nana and Papie for the day!!
With that said, readers must be taught to apply skills and strategies to help them comprehend, make meaning, and draw conclusions. This author study is designed to introduce the importance of “making meaning” while reading. It was created by and aligned with the common core reading standards! Throughout this unit students will begin to ask the question, “What do good readers do?” as they apply imperative reading skills to aid in making meaning from the text. This unit is perfect for the beginning of the school year but could be used anytime!
These are the included books and focus skills…
Chrysanthemum {staying focused}
Wemberly Worried {making connections}
Sheila Rae the Brave {visual images}
Chester’s Way {character traits/analysis}
Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse {Making Inferences}
